What is Agate?

Agate is a microcrystalline variety of Silica, chiefly Chalcedony, a mineral of the Quartz family. Like Obsidians, Agates too are associated with volcanic rocks. The stone was first discovered by a Greek Philosopher, Theophrastus, between 4th and 3rd centuries BC along the banks of Achates river.

Agate is sometimes called the Eart Rainbow because of the banded appearance. These bands tell the story of this stone’s basic formation in the volcano itself. Agates are formed when the siliceous matter deposits in, cavities of volcanic walls or rocks, layer upon layer. Thus when agates are cut from there in a transverse manner, it leaves a series of concentric lines (representing the earlier deposition of siliceous layers), and hence giving it a banded form. Such agates are also known as lace agates, banded agates, riband agates or striped agates.
